Margarita Ochoa triumphed in the newaza women's 45-kg category to secure the Philippines' first gold medal of the 5th Asian Beach Games on Sunday in Da Nang, Vietnam.
The 26-year-old Ochoa bested Thailand's Suwanan Boonsorn in the finals after getting past Dinara Jumadurdyyeva of Turkmenistan in the semis, and Do Thu Ha of Vietnam in the quarterfinals.
With Ochoa's victory, the Philippines now has eight medals in the competition.
Another jiu-jitsu practitioner, Gian Taylor Dee, settled for the silver medal after losing to Amir Yahya Abudlamir Albazy of Iraq in the finals of the newaza men's 62-kg final.
The Philippines also has six bronzes, courtesy of Apryl Jessica Eppinger (newaza women's 62-kg); Helen Dawa (kurash, women's 52-kg division); Jenielou Mosqueda (kurash, women's 57-kg division); Philipe Delarmino (muay, men's bantamweight division); Jonathan Polosan (muay, men's light welterweight division); and Jay Harold Gregorio (muay, men's middleweight division).
The Philippines sent a total of 65 athletes to the Asian Beach Games.
