Kuwait, September 29, 2015: The central coastal city of Danang in Vietnam has begun the official countdown to the Olympic Council of Asia’s next major event: the 2016 Asian Beach Games. The fifth edition of the OCA’s popular sand and sea sports festival will be held in Danang from September 24 to October 3, 2016.
It will feature 14 sports, 22 disciplines and 178 events and is expected to attract 5,000 athletes and officials from the OCA’s 45 National Olympic Committees. To mark the one-year countdown to the opening ceremony, the organisers held a celebration on September 24 when a countdown clock, measuring 21 metres x 2.2 metres, was installed at Ngo Quyen Street and Pham Van Dong Street.
The clock, featuring the Games logos and the symbol of Ngu Hanh Son (Marble Mountains), displays the number of days, hours, minutes and seconds left until the opening of the Games. Speaking at the event, the Vice Chairman of Danang City People’s Committee, Mr. Dang Viet Dung, said the city would exert every effort to meet the requirements of the OCA for the overall success of the Games.
He also stressed that the city’s authorities and people would create the best conditions for all athletes to feel welcome during their stay, enabling them to produce their top performance in the competitions. The one-year countdown clock ceremony marked the start of activities to promote the event among the local people as well as to tourists from home and abroad. It was also a reminder to the organising committee and residents of Danang to raise their sense of responsibility and to contribute to preparations for the overall success of the event.
One day before the ceremony, the organising committee hosted the first international press conference at the Furama Hotel, Danang. Almost 200 reporters and other media from Vietnam and international news agencies were briefed about the 5th Asian Beach Games by the Vice Standing Chairman of the Organising Committee, Mr. Vuong Bich Thang, General Director of Vietnam Sports Administration.
The 14 sports are:
Aquatics (marathon swimming and water polo)
Beach martial arts (wrestling, sambo, jujitsu, kurash, pencak silat, vovinam, muay Thai and Vietnam martial arts)
The logo represents sand and waves in the shape of youthful and energetic athletes, while the mascot features a swiftlet - a distinctive bird of Vietnam’s southern central coast. The slogan is “Shining Sea, Bright Future”. Danang is the third largest city in Vietnam and boasts a 30km coastline – ideal for hosting the OCA’s 5th Asian Beach Games in three venue clusters.
