Minh faced ferocious opposition from the very beginning, losing the first set 21-8. He fought back hard in the second set to a draw at 5-5 before Goh Soon Huat took control and maintained a 3-point advantage until the end to take the set at 21-16.

On the same day, Trang, world No 53, was also knocked out by Hsu Ya Ching of Chinese Taipei in the first match of the women's singles event with the score of 0-2.
